BBMB Wellness Event

Thank you to everyone who came to our Wellness Event, with the Wellness' Office Carrie Giese as the speaker! We discussed a lot of helpful information about wellness, resources available to us on campus, as well as places we can find out more information. Some of the information has been summarized below, but this is by no means a comprehensive list. If there are other things that have not been covered in this email that you would like to know more about, there are pamphlets in the MBB Main Office and you can contact Carrie Giese at clgiese@iastate.edu!

The Office of Student Health and Wellness compromises four main units - Recreation Services, The Student Wellness Office, Student Counseling Center, and the Thielen Student Health Center.

The Student Wellness Office has many free services available to students to help with all aspects of wellness. These include a Wellness Dietician for those students with dietary restrictions and concerns on how to navigate those in a college setting, the Collegiate Recovery Community for those who are facing or who have faced addiction, a Peer Wellness Group of students who provide workshops/seminars on different aspects of a healthy life (sleep schedule, stress relief, etc.). There are some resources for financial wellness, as well as information in the Financial Aid Office on setting up a budget, what to look for in a new credit card, what to look for in a loan, etc. There are courses offered on how to help students (and faculty) have conversations about mental health and suicide, as well as information on "warning" signs and tips on how to deal with the emotions of those conversations.

Student Counseling Services is a free counseling service on campus that accepts walk-in appointments on weekdays. You enter and are asked to fill out paperwork regarding what specific concerns you have that brought you in and you will be directed to the best possible help they can offer, whether that be peer groups, counseling sessions, or recommendation to someone outside of the office. Because of the paperwork and the number of students who use this service, there can be 1.5 to 2 hour waits or no wait, depending on your concerns and who else is there. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255; there are also text options (text ISU to 741741) for those who need help outside of office hours.

The Thielen Student Health Center is a medical center geared towards students that provides physicals, STI/STD screenings, flu shots, etc. There are many resources available, and the best way to know if they can help with your specific concern is to call and set up an appointment (515-294-5801). There is a phone line (515-294-7523) for those who have questions about insurance coverage and what happens when you go outside of ISU.

This is not a comprehensive list of every resource available to you, simply those I found most helpful. If there are other aspects of wellness you would like to explore, you can look at the Wellness Office website (https://www.studentwellness.iastate.edu/health-services/), look through the brochures that are in the main office, or contact Carrie Giese (clgiese@iasate.edu).
